2007 Daylight Savings Time (DST) Updates

Daylight Savings Time (DST) has been changed by the U.S. and Canadian Governments to become effective March 11, 2007.  Beginning in 2007, DST will start on the second Sunday in March (March 11, 2007 this year) and change back to standard time on the first Sunday in November (November 4, 207 this year).  This is a change from the current start and end dates that are built into your Windows operating system, Microsoft Outlook email software, and your wireless SmartPhone/PDA devices.

This document is a summary guide on how to update your computers and PDA devices.  This document was created based on information available from Microsoft, Research in Motion (Blackberry), Good Technologies (GoodLink), and Palm.  You may need to contact your software or device manufacturer for more information or support.

The IceMAIL service is based on Microsoft Exchange and all necessary Daylight Savings Time (DST) patches have already been applied to the server farms.  As a customer of IceMAIL, you do not need to be concerned with any Exchange-related upgrade information that you may find in other DST update documentation from your software or PDA manufacturer.

DST Update Process
You are required to update both your desktop/laptop computers and any wireless PDA/SmartPhone with the DST updates.  There is a specific order in which you must install the updates:

  • Update Microsoft Windows operating system
  • Update Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Entourage (for Mac) updates
  • Update Microsoft Windows Mobile or Palm-based PDA
  • Update GoodLink or Blackberry software

The instructions below are organized in the order provided above and should be completed in this order.  Failure to update your systems could result in your appointments/calendar entries on both your Outlook and PDA to have the incorrect time.

1) Microsoft Windows XP and Vista Update

Microsoft Vista does not need any updates in order to handle the new DST change; however, all Windows XP users must apply this update.  The easiest and safest way to perform this update is to use the Windows Update feature within Windows XP.  You can also go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com within Internet Explorer to download and install.  If you have not run the Windows Update process for a while, you may have numerous critical updates that you should download and install.

2) Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 Update

Microsoft Outlook 2003 requires an update from Microsoft called the Time Zone Data Update Tool in order for Outlook 2003 to handle the new DST schedule.  Failure to apply this update will result in existing and new calendar entries to be off by one hour.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 does have the ability to recognize the new DST change; however, Microsoft is recommending that you apply the update anyway as it includes improvements over the tool that is included in Outlook 2007.

To update Outlook, click the “Download” button from the Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook web page. Once downloaded, run the program and follow the instructions.  If you would like more detailed information on this update and the DST changes, you can go to support.microsoft.com/kb/931667#appliesto on Microsoft’s web site.

3) Microsoft Entourage for Macintosh

To update Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Macintosh, run the Microsoft AutoUpdate tool on your Apple computer.  This AutoUpdate is configured, by default, to automatically check for updates to the software once per week or month so you may have already downloaded and installed that update.  Run the Microsoft AutoUpdate program from the Applications > Microsoft Office folder and check for updates to make sure you have the latest updates for Entourage.

4) Windows Mobile PDA Update

Microsoft provides the DST update tool for all Windows Mobile devices running Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, or Windows Mobile 5.0.

To update your Windows Mobile PDA “over the air” without a desktop PC connection, navigate to www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx web page using the web browser on your PDA.  Download the Daylight Savings Time 2007 Update for Windows Mobile.  You will need to save the download file to your PDA and then execute/run the program from the location that you saved it onto your PDA.  You may need to use the File Explorer tool on your PDA to find and run the update tool.
After you have installed the update, you must go into your PDA Start > Settings > Clock & Alarms > Data/Time and temporarily change the time zone to any other time zone.  Tab OK or select Done to accept the changed “temporary” time zone.  Now go back and change the time zone back to your “permanent” desired time zone setting and tap OK or select Done to accept.  This change and then change-back of your time zone setting is required.

For more detailed information or alternative methods for updating your Windows Mobile SmartPhone/PDA, go to www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving/default.mspx.  Also note that you must re-apply this DST update after any hard reset of your device.

5) Palm PDA Update

Palm has provided the DST update tool for all PDA and SmartPhones running the Palm operating system.

To update your Palm-based device “over the air” without a desktop PC connection, navigate to www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/dst_palmos.html#ota from your web browser on the handheld.  Download the DSTSUpdater.prc file from this web page.  When prompted, select Save To: Applications and select Save.  This will cause the update program to be saved to your Applications menu on the Palm PDA.  Once downloaded, go to the Applications menu from your Palm’s main menu (or “home”) button.  Tap to run the application named DSTUpdater.  The tap OK on the screen that appears and your device will update.

For more detailed information or alternative methods for updating your Palm SmartPhone/PDA, go to www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/dst_palmos.html.  Also note that you must re-apply this DST update after any hard reset of your device.

6) GoodLink Update

Customers running GoodLink on their Windows or Palm SmartPhone/PDA must run the updates above first.  IceMAIL will automatically push the newest GoodLink software update (version 4.9.3) to your wireless PDA prior to March 11, 2007.  You will be prompted by the GoodLink software that a new version is available.  You must select “yes” to download and install the update.  The installation is automatic and you should follow the on-screen instructions.

All customers activating new GoodLink devices/services after March 1, 2007 will automatically have the new software version and do not need to run the update

7) Blackberry Update

Customers running Blackberry Enterprise on their RIM-based SmartPhone/PDA must run the updates above first.  IceMAIL will automatically push the newest Blackberry software update to your wireless PDA prior to March 11, 2007.  You may be prompted by the Blackberry software that a new version is available.

All customers activating new Blackberry devices/services after March 1, 2007 will automatically have the new software version and do not need to run the update.
